jos crisis

TENSION, yesterday,  enveloped Jos, Plateau State capital where 32 people have been confirmed dead and 74 others hospitalised following multiple blasts which rocked the metropolis on Christmas eve.

The gory picture of the bombings was painted just as President Goodluck Jonathan vowed to fish out the perpetrators and punish them according to the law.

Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang pointed finger  at some highly placed people as the masterminds, calling on the Federal Government to bring her full weight to bear on investigations to fish out the culprits.

Briefing journalists yesterday, Plateau State commissioner of police, Mr. Abdulrahman Akano, said a total of seven explosives were planted in two parts of the state capital.

ex president

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who twice ruled Nigeria, once in the 1970s and then for eight years starting in 1999, collapsed today at the St. Stephens Anglican Church in Igbotako, Ondo State.

The fainting incident took place at about 12 noon, Nigerian time, at a thanksgiving service in honour of Major General Olu Bajowa (Rtd), an Obasanjo protégé who is celebrating his 70th birthday.  Major General Olu Bajowa was once indicted for mismanaging the Nigerian airways.

Obasanjo was rushed to a sickbay at the home of the celebrant. When he re-appeared, he appeared woozy, but managed to complete the event before returning home to Abeokuta, Ogun State, later in the day.  The former president has faced a multitude of personal misfortunes in recent times. On one occasion, he was attacked and ridiculed in broad daylight at the Lagos Airport by an irate Nigerian who blamed him for the political and economic crisis bedeviling the country. In another public event, the former governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose, insulted him in public, calling him "father of bastards."

Although Obasanjo's real age is unknown, the former head of state is said to suffer from diabetes.  Like most former leaders, he obtains his medical care in foreign hospitals.

11-year-old girl buries aunt’s baby alive

In what seems to be a scene from a horror movie, 11-year-old girl, Shekinat, on Sunday November 14, buried her aunt‘s baby, 18-month old Usnah, in a shallow pit beside a soak-away pit in an uncompleted building in Aboru, Agbado/Oke Odo Local Council Development Area, Lagos.

Usnah, a baby girl, was in that pit for four days, hanging between an opening space between the excavated pit and the soak-away wall, with her head acting as a hook that suspended her body. The whole neighbourhood of Pipeline Road and its environs were said to have been thrown into confusion as the sad news of the missing girl spread like wild fire during the harmattan.

The parents of the baby, Mrs. Barakat Badmus and Mr. Nurudeen Badmus, were simply inconsolable as they searched the bush and isolated buildings around their residence on 19, Pipeline Road, Aboru, looking for their only child.

She was later found in a pit, covered with leaves and rags, four days after the baby had been missing. When Usnah was finally found in an uncompleted building beside her parents‘ abode, her parents were apprehensive. Was she still alive? If yes, in what state of health would she be by now? Questions; and more questions, begging for answers! Mercifully, dark-skinned Usnah was alive! However, she has suffered bruises in both ears, which portrayed the position she stayed for those four agonising days, at the mercy of the elements.

14 Years Old Girl Pregnant For Her 50 years Old Papi | Talk of Naija

14 Years Old Girl Pregnant For Her 50 years Old Papi | Talk of Naija

A 50 year old man Yesiru Onajobi is in the police custody for allegedly defiling his 14 years old daughter.

The incident happened at Bogije community in Ibeju Lekki Local government council of the State. The incest has produced a seven day old baby. The victim, Kehinde Onajobi is a JSS1 student and said her father threatened to kill her if she revealed their love relationship to anybody.

The incest came to public notice when the villagers discovered that Mr. Onajobi is fathering a child from his own daughter. They raised alarm over the incest and Mr. Onajobi was ostracised from the village.

Mr Onajobi ran to the Elemoro police station on November 11th to report the incident and he was subsequently arrested by the police for alleged defilement of his daughter.

On Monday, the police paraded Mr. Onajobi and he confessed to have defiled his daughter. He however said his daughter lured him to have sex with her.

"I want to let people know that my daughter is not a virgin, she seduced me.She was fond of sleeping naked in my bed , she has a twin brother, I have been taking care of both of them since my wife died four years ago . I only slept with her once, she has always been wayward even before my wife died. ." He said.

He also narrated how he eventually slept with his daughter and how he was ostracised in the community "One day, she told me she was sick ,and I took her to the hospital , where it was known to us that she was pregnant , afterwards my in-laws came to take her to Lagos, it was after she put to bed that she came to accuse me that I am the father of the baby.

The villagers came around to tell me of my atrocity of sleeping with my daughter , and afterwards they ostracised me from the village , they said if I refuse to leave town , they will arrest me" Mr. Onajobi, a farmer said.

Miss Onajobi said her father was the man that disvirgined her and she had lost count of the number of times he had slept with her.

" Immediately my mum died, I stayed back with my dad, it didn't take long that he started having sex with me , when I told him I have missed my period , he only continued in sleeping with me . He threatened me several times not to tell anyone of his wicked act.I gave birth on Wednesday but I don't want this child, I need the government to take care of the baby so I can go back to school''. Miss Onajobi said.

The police spokesman, Samuel Jinadu, a deputy superintendent of police said the suspect will soon be charged to court."The command is deeply concerned about this immoral act by a father who defiled his own daughter and put her in the family way. Lagosians are advised to be morally upright and they should not take the law into their hands. The man will be charged to court for defilement and the girl and her baby will be taken to the police welfare house at Alakara (Mushin) for proper care. Meanwhile, we call on other private organisations to come to the aid of the girl, we will be contacting some of them for their assistance" Mr. Jinadu said

Assault: actress threatens to sue Speaker

Top Nollywood  actress and a prominent member of the Actors Guild of Nigeria(AGN), Ufuoma Ejenebor cried like a baby  on the 29th of October.

On that black day, she was assaulted by a group of convoy traced to be the convoy of the Honorable Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Honorable Adeyemi Ikuforiji.

Narrating her ordeal in the brutal hands of these hoodlums  in a press conference,  the pretty actress amidst flood of tears said “I was driving along Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, in my  blue Nissall Xterra Jeep with registration number UC 189 KJA under a heavy traffic.

A black police Toyota Hilux truck with registration number ‘ESCORT’ squeezed its way on my right side and in that process hit me,  damaging the right side fender of my jeep.”

“I got frightened and was practically forced out of my lane. To my utter shock, the driver neither stopped nor showed any sign of remorse, following the incident. So, I quickly went  after him to draw  his attention, lo! And behold, what I got in return was the unexpected, showers of insults  by the driver and occupants of the vehicle who called unprintable me names.” she recounted.

Continuing, she added “that got me infuriated as I started trailing them.  Just then, the driver swerved the road, forcing, me to slow down and subsequently blocked me. Then all of a sudden, and  deliberately, the truck stopped and intentionally reversed straight unto my front grill hitting me violently in the presence of other road users and thereafter sped off.

It was then I realized that they were actually on a convoy and then I called my family and my lawyer who advised that I should record the happenings with my phone.”

Apparently, the realization that I was recording the incident infuriated them as they suddenly gave me a hot chase and in the process threatened to shoot me if I did not open my car. Unfortunately opening the car was my greatest undoing as they pounded on me, snatching my cell phone, ransacked  my car and later disappeared  with my laptops and some of my other valuables.

“My lawyer had since filed in petitions to the office of the Honorable Speaker and nobody had neither called nor written to say anything about the incidence.” he said.

On whether the case will be taken to court or not,  the assaulted actress stated that she definitely will take the matter to court if there is no response from the office of the Honorable Speaker over the matter, adding that “I will sue him  for a compensation of N35million”  because according to her, she had lost  a lead role job because of this incident and all her contacts are in her blackberry cell phone that was taken away by these men.

money recovery

Landed property and business concerns worth over N2tr have been seized from 46 politicians and influential Nigerians in the last seven years by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission following corruption charges preferred against them, SUNDAY PUNCH investigations have revealed.

The forfeited properties totalling 203 and scattered across the country and overseas were recovered on the orders of the courts.

This revelation is coming as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said it would in the next few weeks seal and seize more properties. The planned seizure is a result of court judgments yet to be implemented.

The EFCC Head, Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Babafemi, confirmed this to our correspondent on Friday, saying ”there is another 16 on our list that we will be reclaiming in another two weeks.”

He added, ”The EFCC has the mandate to identify, verify and manage all forfeited assets. In the course of the identification and verification exercise, we discovered quite a lot of official orders that were not enforced during the tenure of the former chairman.”

The Commission was formerly under the superintendence of Malam Nuhu Ribadu, who is now a presidential aspirant of the Action Congress of Nigeria.

Our correspondent gathered that an asset forfeiture unit was set up in 2008 to trace all the houses that the courts had ordered to be claimed by the government in different parts of the country.

Babafemi said, ”That unit became imperative when we realised that their former owners were not ready to let go of the properties willingly. In all, we have 203 houses worth over N2tr from 46 court orders.”

Already, tenants in the 203 houses have received letters from the EFCC that the buildings now belong to the Federal Government.

The letter, SUNDAY PUNCH gathered directed them to pay their rents to the Federal Government Recovery account that is being managed by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Also, property managers have been hired to manage the estates.

Babafemi said, ”The managers will administer the assets to generate revenue for the government. These properties no longer belong to the individuals that owned them. They now belong to the government and will be treated as such.”

Former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, two weeks ago, joined the list of the 46 persons who had their properties confiscated after the commission seized two of his buildings in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Babafemi, said the commission had earlier confiscated the buildings and had court papers which gave it the leave to seize the properties.

Fayose, the EFCC spokesman said, had broken the commission‘s seal on the buildings and regained entry into the buildings, an action that prompted the anti-graft agency‘s reaction.

Babafemi added, ”The order was not obtained today. It is an existing order. There was a subsisting court order for the temporary forfeiture of those buildings. The properties were seized since 2006 but they broke our seal and got into the building. We just got information on that which prompted our agents to move in.”

Apart from Fayose, the former Managing Director of Oceanic Bank International Plc, Mrs. Cecilia Ibru, also forfeited N191bn assets comprising 49 properties in Nigeria, United States and Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to the FG, after a federal high court sentenced her to 18 months imprisonment last month.

In 2009, the EFCC also seized Cosmo FM radio station, Rainbownet Nigeria Ltd and other companies believed to be owned by former Enugu State governor, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani.

The properties were seized by the commission vide a Lagos Federal High Court order in May 2007 following the indictment of Nnamani over alleged corruption and embezzlement of state funds to the tune of N5.3billion.

Suspected to be on the list also are properties of former Plateau State governor, Joshua Dariye; controversial businessmen, Fred Ajudua and Emmanuel Nwude; former Bayelsa governor, D.S.P Alamieyeseigha, and the former Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun.

FBI Arrives In Nigeria To 'Rescue' Kidnap Victims In Akwa Ibom

in

Elite agents of the American Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) are on their way to Nigeria to join the hunt for the abductors of two U.S. nationals. They were kidnapped by unidentified gunmen off the coast of Akwa Ibom state during an attack on an oil rig. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said the agents, skilled in trailing and capturing kidnappers will work with Nigerian officials to secure freedom for the hostages and investigate the incident.

The hostages who work for oil services firm, Afren, were taken last Sunday. The company operating an oil has increased the number of those seized to seven .A spokesman for Afren said the company had confirmed two Indonesians were among those taken when gunmen in speed boats attacked the offshore rig.The attack happened about 12 kilometers off the coast of Akwa Ibom state. Afren had previously said only five people were kidnapped, and identified them as two Americans, two French and one Canadian. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The State Department said the Niger Delta is home to criminal gangs that steal oil and take hostages for ransom. Officials also said the region also has militants who claim they are fighting for a fairer distribution of oil wealth. It warned American nationals to take extra security measures and postpone all unnecessary trips to the region

Policemen fighting against each other with their AK 47 rifles held carelessly

Policemen in show of shame in Lagos.. POLICEMEN are out in every society to keep the peace, and maintain law and order. But the story was different in Lagos yesterday, as three policemen engaged in a brawl at Ajegunle, along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, endangering the lives of hundreds of road users with their AK 47 rifles held carelessly as they exchanged blows.People were seen scampering for safety, and nobody could tell what caused the fight, which got so messy that the policemen wrestled and dragged themselves on the ground. The fight caused a heavy traffic build up that lasted for hours on both sides of the road. The three fighters are corporals serving in the elite Mobile Police Force. Some motorists and hawkers, who could have intervened, were afraid of the guns they were wielding while the fight was going on.One of them said: “We don’t really know the cause of the fight. We just saw them fighting. Some of us tried to move in to know the cause of the fight but because of the way they they were holding their guns while still fighting, we were afraid of a case of accidental discharge.“It would have been better if they had handled the matter more maturely than to engage in a street fight.”

Police arrest woman smuggling rifles in maize

Police arrest woman smuggling rifles in maize

Police have arrested a woman on suspicion of trying to smuggle assault rifles hidden in sacks of maize from neighbouring Chad to help arm a radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

The 37-year-old mother of seven was caught in possession of ten AK-47 rifles hidden in the sacks after travelling by boat across Lake Chad, which sits on Nigeria's remote northeastern border with Chad and Cameroon, police said.

"The illegal arms were concealed but recovered inside four bags of maize," Mohamed Jinjiri Abubakar, the Police Commissioner for Borno State, told Reuters. "Available information suggests the suspect arrested was behind the aiding of religious fundamentalists unleashing terror on innocent civilians in Borno."

Boko Haram, a radical Islamic sect behind an uprising last year which led to clashes in which hundreds died, has been blamed for torching police stations and fatal sniper attacks on police officers and local leaders in Borno in recent weeks.
Local authorities have long said Boko Haram is supported by members from neighbouring countries. Hundreds of immigrants have been deported back to Chad, Cameroon and Niger as part of a security crackdown.

It is unclear how many followers Boko Haram has, but poverty, unemployment and a lack of education have meant its leaders have managed to build a cult-like following which is as much violently anti-establishment as fervently religious.

Its views are not espoused by the vast majority of Nigeria's Muslim population, the largest in sub-Saharan Africa.

Robbers raid pools office, kill one in Rivers
By Chukwudi Akasike, Port Harcourt
Thursday, 11 Nov 2010

Armed robbers on Wednesday raided a major pools office, Telegraph Nigeria Enterprises in Port Harcourt, Rivers State and killed the son of the pool agent in the process.

The armed robbers had parked their ash Toyota Corolla vehicle at the front of the pool office on 34, Nsukka Street, Port Harcourt at about 11.50am, before rushing into the building.

Our correspondent gathered that the hoodlums, who were four in number, entered into the office and opened fire on some of its occupants.

Armed with AK-47 rifles, the bandits shot the owner of the pool office, identified as Olukayode, on his left hand before going for his two sons.

Olukayode’s two sons, Femi and Jamiu were shot at close range before the hoodlums took away an unidentified sum of money in a box, suspected to be stakers’ winnings.

While Femi, who was shot in the leg, was immediately rushed to the hospital with his father, Jamiu was confirmed dead at the gate of Teme Clinic.

Jamiu was said to have been shot in the stomach, which made it difficult for him to survive the attack.

“Jamiu was a very nice guy. The armed robbers should have spared his life. We are not sure if he struggled with the armed robbers before he was shot,” an eyewitness, who claimed to be Jamiu’s friend, said.

Both Olukayode and Femi, who were bleeding profusely before being rushed out of the pool office, are currently receiving treatment in a nearby hospital.

Policemen, who were usually found on Nsukka Street, disappeared when the incident occurred.

But the Public Relations Officer of the state command, Mr. Akin Fakorede, confirmed the incident and said that security agents were on the trail of the robbers.

Fakorede added that the hoodlums shot and killed one person while two others were rushed to the hospital.

Nigeria’s debt hits $32.5bn

Nigeria’s debt hits $32.5bn

By Inalegwu Shaibu
ABUJA—Chairman Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debt, Senator Ehigie Uzamare, Monday, disclosed that Nigeria’s debt had risen to $32.5 billion. This comprises $4.5 billion foreign and $28 billion local debt.
Senator Uzamare, who made the disclosure at the public hearing on the Debt Management Office Bill, called for caution in government borrowing, despite the importance of external borrowing to fund developmental projects.
He said: “Currently, our external debt stands at $4.5 billion, domestic debt is valued at over $28 billion and is rising. Debt is good if well managed. We must borrow to grow the economy. At this level of our economy and national development, we need to borrow to finance budget gaps and fund infrastructural development.
It is essential that we regulate our borrowings otherwise we find ourselves with a huge debt overhang again.”
Senate urges caution over borrowing
Also lamenting the rising debt, Senate President, Senator David Mark represented by Senator Ahmed Markafi, said the Debt Management Office must be properly empowered to scrutinise government borrowing.
Senator Mark who also blamed the rising debt on indiscriminate borrowings by states and local governments, and Federal Government misguided partnerships with private companies, called for caution in government borrowings.
He added that government at all levels must avoid borrowing for frivolous reasons except for development projects and job creations which will fast track the repayment of the loan.
His words, “I do hope that State Governors and Chairmen of Local Governments who are entitled to borrow money under this act will abide by the provisions of the act and exhibit high sense of fiscal responsibility in managing the fund so borrowed. We must work together, keep our debt at a manageable level. I say this because at the end of the day, we have only one economy.”

Siasia may not have much to do till March 2011 when Nigeria host Ethiopia in a 2012 Nations Cup qualifier.

On November 17 the Eagles will face Iran in a friendly affair in Tehran, but Siasia‘s Nigeria teammate Augustine Eguavoen, who has been in charge of the team since Swede Lars Lagerback ‘s contract with NFF expired after the World Cup, will be in the dugout.

Siasia was coach of the Nigerian Olympic team, which won the silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Games and the U-20 side that finished runners-up to Argentina at the 2005 World Cup in Holland. He will earn N5m a year as Eagles coach.
